Deselection of our councillor silences Somers Town

Labour councillor Paul Tomlinson has been blocked from standing again

• COUNCILLOR Paul Tomlinson was elected by us in 2015 and, according to the CNJ, barely missed a council meeting and acted on behalf of his constituents.

Yet he has been deselected, (The big purge? Councillor who spoke out against new skyscraper on green space is deselected by Labour, December 2).

We voted for him: he represented his constituents’ views with integrity, speed, dedication, and genuine care.

When Cllr Tomlinson questioned the sale of a public park for a luxury tower block he was not acting alone, he was taking forward a request from his community to do so; when Cllr Tomlinson took out a Freedom of Information request to investigate Camden Council spending on consultation he was taking forward action agreed by a community; when he reported back on the FOI to reveal a spend of £300,000 on consultants it was because we had asked him to.

We can attest to the care he took to clarify and respond to our views. In short, he took pains to represent the community who voted for him. Entirely properly. So it now seems those who represent their people are deselected.

By deselecting Cllr Tomlinson, you silence Somers Town. Somers Town (yet again) does not have a voice. This is a dangerous trend: a curtailment of freedom to voice concerns and tolerate dissent.

We elected a councillor to represent our interests in Somers Town. Why would we vote for someone who might not?
