Kristen Stewart in Personal Shopper

I’M surely not alone in finding the political kerfuffle caused by the new Disney film of Beauty and the Beast a trifle irritating, am I?

I’m not talking about the obvious idiot numpties who may have got the hump that it has a white person kissing a black person, or the fact it apparently has a “gay” character in it. No, I’m a tad irritated by the general pat on the back Disney is enjoying for being “enlightened” by including these elements, and by the fact Emma Watson’s Belle is meant to be some kind of feminist icon (no disrespect to Emma Watson, who has used her fame to promote civil rights causes).

But I don’t quite buy that, either– the end game is still marriage, even if she’s taking less nonsense than previous princesses.

So Disney is dragging itself kicking and screaming into the 21st century? Slow hand-clap – you should have joined the rest of us long ago, Mickey. Add to this the fact their “gay” character in the film is a camp, stupid stereotype and I’m even less inclined to hand out a congratulatory civil rights sash to a firm that’s been renowned for pedalling dumb stereotypes for decades.

Excuse me while I tip my popcorn on the floor and spew into the empty bag.

• MEANWHILE, check out Personal Shopper, starring Kristen Stewart.

She plays an American in Paris, working for an insufferable celebrity. She’s really come to Europe to live in the home of her dead twin brother – and things go a little weird when she begins to sense he might be speaking to her from across the divide.
