Pavement cyclists: ‘Perhaps it is only when there is a fatality this problem may be addressed’

• I THOROUGHLY commiserate with Charles Sears on his experience with pavement cyclists, (The pavement cyclist who turned attacker, October 26).

I have long been troubled by cyclists on pavements and have avoided having an accident on several occasions.

When I tackle them to say that it is illegal to ride on the pavement I get very rude remarks, told to shut up and mind my own business and sometimes very foul language.

I have reported this to the police but they do nothing and suggest I contact the council to consider putting CCTV cameras in the main streets in my area.

This, of course, is a non-starter. One cannot report a cyclist who is whizzing by at tremendous speed.

Also they are not licensed and if they were one would have to be very adept at taking their number because of the rate of speed they are going.

Gone are the days when there used to be police officers on the beat who would be able to witness this breaking of the law and danger to pedestrians. Perhaps it is only when there is a fatality this problem may be addressed.

Many cyclists do ride on the road but there are quite a few who flaunt the law and many, of course, go through red lights too which could lead to a bad accident.

If there are any cyclists reading this, please consider pedestrians and do the right thing and stay on the roads.
