Cycling on the pavement is illegal and the law should be enforced
Thursday, 9th February 2017
• GREG Carson’s sneering letter regarding correspondents to the New Journal complaining about cycling on the footway is the typical arrogant attitude of cyclists who think that they are above the law (Book ’em, Letters February 2).
Cycling on the footway is illegal and cyclists know it but also know that there is only a miniscule chance of being caught and fined.
Now they are actually being encouraged to cycle on the footway by that naive Sergeant Nick Clarke, of Camden police, who believes the excuse that cyclists say they do this because it is dangerous on the roads.
I have apprehended many cyclists on the footway and the response has ranged from being threatened with a thumping, “What is it to do with you?” and “Are you a policeman?”.
The point is that the police are here to enforce the law and not to make arbitrary decisions about what laws to enforce and what not.
