Cherish our music heritage, don’t murder it

• I AM somebody who firmly believes that if you move next to a pub or late-night venue, then you have no right to complain about noise, (Residents say they’re driven wild by buskers singing the same old songs, July 13).

Nightlife in London is dying as more and more venues are forced to close, as more yuppies decide to raise their families in apartments overlooking nightclubs and music venues.

Having said that, I sympathise with complaints from neighbours about music performers at Britannia Junction outside Camden Town underground station.

As a Camden Town resident, I have no issue with noise from partygoers and tourists. As far as I was concerned, it was part and parcel of my rental contact in NW1.

What I do take issue with, however, is how the same music performers play the same set over and over again.

For instance, every Saturday afternoon I am crooned at by the same performer with renditions of Back to Black by Amy Winehouse from my own home.

If I were to stay home all day, I would hear this same song at least five or six times. Back to Black? Perhaps Back to Back is a more apt title.

I must stress again that it is not the noise from music performers that bothers me, in fact I feel privileged to be able to live in an area with such a rich cultural history.

What is becoming unbearable, however, is the content of their performances. Hearing the same songs over and over again, week after week, is nothing more than sensory torture.

Music in general should not be clamped down on. It is after all an important part of Camden’s artistic heritage and needs to be celebrated.

But if celebrating our artistic heritage in 2023 simply consists of the same performers playing the same Amy Winehouse hits, then our artistic heritage is already on its knees as far as I’m concerned.
