Camden’s rubbish mountains can’t be dealt with by bigger and more bins
Thursday, 4th May 2017
• AS I was strolling along last Sunday I encountered some rubbish bins overflowing in two separate locations: the first was Byng Place WC1, opposite Waterstones bookshop, and the second was Huntley Street/Torrington Place WC1.
I live just off Leather Lane EC1, where there are food stalls and rubbish becomes a real problem in the area.
The “recycling” bins located in nearby Brookes Market are frequently overflowing, often containing non-recyclable items and food from the stalls.
The problems of rubbish mountains in Camden and general litter have been going on for a long time. You only need to walk along High Holborn of an evening to see how bad it is.
The answer has to be more regular collections and not, as the council suggests, simply more bins and bigger bins. Rats and mice have become more prevalent as a result and pose a real health risk.
