A sad loss of a special character

Eric Gordon (left) at the UN
• AS a trustee of the Anne Frank Educational Trust we decided that turning into the new century year 2000 we should get signatures of leading people to sign a statement of wishes that we move into a future of understanding, harmony, and without racial prejudices, (Eric Gordon: Tributes to Camden’s great chronicler as founder and editor of CNJ dies at 89, April 8).
We took the statement to United Nations headquarters New York where Kofi Annan signed it in the company of a deputation of MPs including Mo Mowlam – and Eric Gordon, who is pictured (far left) next to Anne Frank’s remaining relative and cousin.
I had the occasion to share this trip with Eric and to enjoy his company, since when he would always acknowledge me as part of the local area.
Eric to me was an oddball eccentric with clearly great journalistic talent and the devotion to make us locals aware of events. It’s been a pleasure to wait very Thursday to read what’s happening.
I feel sad this special character is lost to our community and I pray someone will pick up his baton and keep CNJ going.
