A question on ‘human shields’ in this war

Thursday, 30th November 2023

• IT is good to have another voice (If you care about the Palestinians start condemning Hamas’s treatment of them since 2006, November 23), and Joyce Glasser makes some interesting observations and assertions.

The CNJ coverage may have become rather parochial with its concentration on the policy of Sir Keir Starmer towards Israel action in Gaza; but in fairness it’s a big story nationally and he is one of Camden’s MPs so of interest to this Camden-based newspaper.

Ms Glasser also points out that Israel is a rare example of democracy in the Middle East, though it is alarming that the current government led by Benjamin Netanyahu has been attempting to undermine it by his tinkering with the judiciary.

I think, though, I have to ask if Ms Glasser thinks Hamas holds its own citizens as human shields, and I won’t argue this one way or the other as I don’t know – though it does seem that both Israel and Hamas hold Gaza citizens prisoner in Gaza with their extremely limited ability to move beyond Gaza’s borders as an Israeli policy – then is it right that Israel has so far killed 16,000 of them, in their attempt to get to Hamas? Would it do this if its own citizens were the “human shields”?
