• I NOTE that in his robust protest against Fiona Millar’s letter from Abu Dis, Martin Sugarman, (How and why Israel defends itself, November 24), objects to settler colonialism in the 7th century but is not worried about it now.

I think his telling of history is dodgy but the important point is what is happening now and the equal right of all to security of person, to move around their country, to freedom from torture, to family life, etc.

The terrible fact now in Israel / Palestine is that an apartheid situation is systematically denying these human rights to Palestinians.

In 2022 the situation is horribly cruel, bloody, unequal, and not at all needed whatever happened in history. Let us move on.
