A MINIATURE rail line is to be installed high above the shops in Camden Town as part of a design festival.

The High Street High Line will run for 10 days on top of No 26 Camden High Street this month, from September 13 to 21, with images from an on-board webcam being beamed to a screen at ground level.

The art project, part of the London Design Festival, is backed by Camden Town Unlimited business group and its Camden Collective scheme, which helps young designers.

Jessica Behar, 33, from the Camden Collective, said the goal was to find an alternative use for vacant spaces above buildings.

“Our chief exec Simon Pitkeathley has had this wonderful long-term vision to turn tops of shops into a green corridor that connects Euston and Camden,” she said. “Even though we have Regent’s Park around the corner this area is very urban and built-up,”

The project was inspired by The High Line in New York, a disused rail line which has been transformed into an urban park as part of a regeneration scheme.

Other artworks coming to Camden Town for the festival include a giant birdhouse installation above the Camden Eye pub, a green, growing billboard and a selection of “Flags From Nowhere” by Marc Fuya.
