WE’VE had the dubious delights of The Only Way Is Essex, and the inverted snobbery of watching Made In Chelsea.
But now the real is going to be put in reality TV with the launch of a new show that focuses on the movers and shakers of Camden Town.
Camden Unlocked is the brainchild of Kentish Town TV executives Mark and Bani Mendy.
The cousins noted that the popular characters in the new wave of drama-documentary TV shows couldn’t come near any of the wonderful characters they had met down the years in Camden Town.
Mark, a former William Ellis school pupil who has worked in the TV and music industry, said: “Who wouldn’t want to watch a show featuring the great people who live here?
This is real London – an area that is totally multicultural, really representative of what’s great about our city.
“And let’s be clear: this show won’t be like Essex or Chelsea – we want to represent the brilliance, the diversity, and the joy of Camden and show it to the world.”
Producers are discussing the series with major TV stations and they have already begun casting – “ranging from old-timer market stall traders to people whose background comes from all corners of the Earth but they call Camden home,” says Mark – but are also looking out for more.
