Youth League – Camden's Year 6 District football team win the Kay Trophy

PLAYERS representing Camden’s Year 6 District football team ended a 17-year wait for silverware by capturing the prestigious Kay Trophy.

The triumphant side, which the New Journal proudly sponsors, returned home from south London to a heroes’ welcome after a thrilling 3-2 final win over Bermondsey.

Gospel Oak schoolboy Trae Coyle, who also plays for Arsenal, did all the damage in front of goal as he scored a stunning hat-trick in the opening 15 minutes.

With Bermondsey pulling two goals back, goalkeeper Jonti Purdon and defenders Rinor Mjeku, Frankie McCarthy, Charlie Wickham, Lucus Drayton and Devin Mills had to battle for their borough to earn a famous win.

For manager Abul Koyar, who runs the team with fellow Sports Development Officer Shaun Taylor, the victory was extra sweet.

The 29-year-old played in the heart of Camden’s midfield the last time they won the competition… in 1995.
“It was great to get my hands back on the trophy,” he said. “When I picked it up I heard myself saying, ‘it’s great to have you back again’.
“All the boys have shown such tremendous spirit and determination throughout the season. They’ve worked tirelessly as a team and really deserve their success. I’m ecstatic for them.”
