FOOTBALLERS representing the Islington Primary School’s District team continued their winning run on Saturday when they netted a 1-0 victory at Brent in the Lester Finch Trophy.
The talented team are on the brink of booking their place in the semi-finals after maintaining a 100 per cent record in the competition this season.
What proved to be the winning goal against Brent came after only six minutes when a corner from Anthony Needs fell for Nathan Carlyle, who poked the ball home at the third attempt after his two previous attempts were blocked.
Led by captain Kai Innocent, Islington had to dig deep to protect their lead, and were indebted to a number of brave headers, blocks and clearances from Chris Cunningham, Thierry Okwara, Dylan Power and Huzaifah Rahman, while debutant Jack Froome had to clear the ball off the line.
Islington showed great heart and determination to hold out until the final whistle.
Manager Michael MacNeill said: “In the second half the players had to really dig in as we came under a lot of pressure and defended really bravely and worked very hard for each other to gain the win.
“They should be very proud of themselves.”
