YOUR SHOUT: Ban boxing as mortal danger to civilised life!

THE New Journal devoted substantial coverage to Olympic boxing.

Yet should we really celebrate boxing? It is a dangerous and violent sport which can lead to serious injury and even death. Take one example, the case of Francisco Rodriguez, who was stopped by a technical knockout in the 10th round of a boxing match in November 2009 in Chicago.

After the match he underwent emergency brain surgery and died. No wonder the British Medical Association and World Medical Association have called for a ban on boxing.

Some argue other sports, such as BMX cycling, are dangerous and that boxing is no different.

But injuring your opponent is the essential object of boxing, which is not the case with BMX cycling and similar sports.

I mean no disrespect to Olympic boxers, such as Nicola Adams but instead of celebrating boxing we should ban it.

Heartfelt thanks

THANKS, Catherine Etoe, for your Summer Diary (Real footballers, August 9).

It is heartening to see women’s sport having such a high profile, but, as you say, the trick is keeping it there. As we know in the past there were successful women’s football teams which were later banned by the FA or its equivalent.

It seemed a vindictive thing to do and totally unwarranted. I hope you and the New Journal will continue your coverage of all women’s and girls’ sports.
