Your car is a killing machine

• ALL drivers should keep this in mind – something a mother once told her daughter when she was learning to drive.

I was walking along King Henry’s Road this afternoon with my six-year-old when we heard a big thump – and straightaway another one.

We noticed a car behind us driving in the middle of the road, having just run over both big yellow keep left signs on either end of a pedestrian refuge island. (I wasn’t aware that these signs don’t do much damage to cars – they bend down and then pop back up again. I guess they were not designed to protect pedestrians using the refuge island.)

The car stopped after a few metres and an elderly lady got out of the driver’s seat. I asked her if she was OK as my first thought was that she must have passed out or been in an intense emotional state.

She said she couldn’t see because the sun was in her eyes. She couldn’t see. Yet she kept driving. A killing machine. Onto the refuge island, which we could very easily have been on.

When you can’t see, you stop until you can – simple as that. Take your foot off that pedal! She was really apologetic of course. But some mistakes you just can’t afford to make.
