YOUNG runners from Highgate Harriers Athletics Club switched from the track to the open road on Sunday as they raced to glory in the Middlesex Young Athlete Road Relays.

Held in Hayes, the Harriers boasted runners in every age group as they lined-up against some of the top talents from across the county to tackle a testing 3,000m course.

The successful meet saw both the club’s Under-13s girls team and the Under-17s women’s team crowned champs, while the Under-17s men’s squad enjoyed silver success.

Georgia Fear claimed the fastest lap in the Under-17s age group as she completed her 3,000m race in a time of 10 minutes 31 seconds to give her team what proved an unassailable lead.

U-17s women: Esther Pigney, Jess Wilkinson and Georgia Fear

Jess Wilkinson clocked a time of 13 minutes 33 seconds, while Esther Pigney crossed the finishing line in 12 minutes 23 seconds to earn Highgate a commanding team victory.

In the Under-13s girls race lead-off runner Ellie Gillmore finished her lap in third place, which team-mate Dorothy Brock managed to improve upon in the second lap to leave Highgate within touching distance of the title.

With all left to run for, Sasha Fear raced home in 11 minutes 56 seconds to take first place and top spot on the podium.

U-17s men: Adam Stewart, Alastair Sleeman and Terry Fawden

In the Under-17s men’s race Terry Fawden ran the fastest lap of the day as he completed the course in 9 minutes 22 seconds to give Highgate an early lead.

Adam Stewart ran sensibly to hold that position before Alastair Sleeman was just outpaced in the final stages as the team from Trent Park managed to finish 12 seconds faster to take gold.
