GOALS from captain Carmel Clinton and Sarah Boyall guided Camden Town (above) to a historic cup victory on Sunday as they beat Spurs at the Badgers Sports Club in Eltham.
Camden goalkeeper Liz Horton was the first player to stand up and be counted as she produced two outstanding saves to stop Tottenham Reserves from taking the lead.
With half time looming, Town scored a timely goal when striker Mary Guest played in skipper Clinton, who showed great composure as she curled the ball into the top corner.
Tottenham again applied pressure early in the second half and lined-up a good chance to level the scores when they were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area.
The goal-bound strike, however, was no problem for player-of-the-match Horton who produced another crucial save, while defender Jackie Newing was on hand to sweep the follow-up shot off the line.
Town gave themselves a much-needed cushion on the hour mark when vice-captain Jaclyn Thayer’s cross was misjudged by the Spurs goalkeeper, allowing winger Sarah Boyall to coolly slot the ball home and wrap up a hard-fought victory.
Opening goalscorer Clinton praised the entire Camden Town squad after lifting the cup. “This is a great day for our club,” she said. “The whole team gave everything on the pitch and we are all delighted with our performance and achievement.
“We have a great set-up at the club, from the coaches to all the players, and each one can be very proud of today.”
Player-manager Newing added: “I am proud to be a small part of Camden Town’s history as the manager for their first ever cup final.
“Everyone who got us to the final and played on the day should be proud of themselves for being part of that history too.”
