Without the cuts meals on wheels would be at the front-line of help

• I DON’T know how they would do it in the midst of a pandemic but local authorities who, had the Tories not slashed public spending to the bone in the name of a spurious “austerity”, aka tax cuts to the wealthiest, would have had a long established and dedicated meals on wheels and home care service, and kept the service going, no matter what.
They would not have even contemplated withdrawing them, because they would have considered their provision a moral imperative and because those who delivered them would not have allowed it. They would have been front-line services.
It was far more than the delivery of a hot meal to those seniors most in need; it provided regular human contact with a small army of women – and they were almost always women – in every part of the borough, providing a network of support that was comprehensive and almost unimaginable now.
Above all they were mainly locals who were of their communities, knew their families and knew their needs. They were part of our backbone and needed now more than ever. I hope the Tories are proud of themselves.
