The Sante Refugee Mental Health Access Project turns 16
• WE are celebrating (see above) our 16th anniversary of the launch of the Sante Refugee Mental Health Access Project.
Harriet Garland and Helen Bamber spoke at our launch event and now we have former councillor Simon Pearson as a supporter and volunteer. He spoke of his admiration for what we do and the fact that for some asylum seekers it takes 16 to 20 years to attain status in the UK.
It’s a tragedy to have to endure this length of time in slow motion but many do endure it and become a hero simply for battling the system. With our support they prove their worth and gain leave to remain in the UK.
From chefs to artists, to political activists, to property owners, they come for advice and advocacy. We have even helped unjustly detained prisoners and stroke patients. It’s all in a day’s work and each referral deserves equal value and specialist expertise.
If you have two hours a week to spare perhaps consider volunteering as a befriender / case worker. Refugees are ready and waiting to be guided through the maze of essential services we can offer. Will you take up the challenge?
