Why is the CNJ not signed up to IPSO?

• IN the run-up to the local elections one can see that the Camden New Journal does an admirable job of holding local politicians to account without fear or favour.

It’s right and proper that those with power – and those aspiring to it – can be held to account by someone genuinely independent.

It was therefore a surprise to me to learn the CNJ was not signed up to the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

The CNJ has great power, but little accountability. IPSO is, of course, imperfect but it’s the best we have. The CNJ, indeed all local papers, should sign up to IPSO. If not, why not? If not now, when?

The question of press regulation has not been satisfactorily resolved since the Leveson Inquiry report. A significant number of other newspapers including The Guardian and Financial Times have not signed up with IPSO. This in no way means that we are not accountable.

Readers’ complaints and concerns are addressed; we are members of the News Media Association, we adhere to the Society of Editors Code of Practice, and our record of satisfactorily resolving complaints during our 36-year history is second to none.
