Why is the canal in such a mess?

Towpath rubbish next to Danbury Street bridge
• THE Regent’s Canal and its towpath is the most loved recreational area in Islington, indeed in the entire area.
Yet it’s utterly filthy.
The towpath itself, the grass borders, the water surface, even the bottom of the canal are utterly clogged with rubbish.
My photograph (above) shows the bin area next to the Danbury Street bridge. The entire length of the canal is the same.
It is truly shaming on the canal authorities, Islington Council, inconsiderate users, even nearby residents like myself.
How can we tolerate such filth?
We think of ourselves as civilised, we jog and cycle, consume organic foods, vote for green policies, yet we live amid, and tolerate, filth such as would disgrace a third world slum.
The council blames the canal authorities but they do not seem to care. We then take the position that “if they don’t care why should we?” So we simply add to the filth mountain.
It’s truly shaming on us all, but particularly on those authorities who are entrusted with safeguarding our amenities and our freedoms to enjoy the district in which we reside.
