Why I am standing in the by-election
Thursday, 23rd November 2023

Green Party candidate Lorna Jane Russell
• GREENS in Camden have a strong track record of working hard for the Highgate community for almost 20 years.
If elected here in next week’s by-election, I pledge to be fearless in my scrutiny of Camden Council and to challenge Labour to be better.
Labour have a strong majority on the council but it needs more balance. A one-party state is never healthy for democracy.
I am not just standing to provide constructive opposition to Labour, but also to advocate for ambitious policies focused on the need for fairness, a strong local recovery from the pandemic, and for real action on climate change – not just words.
I left the Labour Party to join the Green Party two years ago and I haven’t looked back. I am proud to belong to a party that is committed to promoting social justice, sustainability, and community wellbeing and empowerment, and one that supports a ceasefire in Gaza.
But how much Greens can do to support the community depends on me retaining our one council seat next week. Elections here are very close but I hope that residents in Highgate put their faith in me to be their next councillor.
I promise to work hard, listen, and represent our community.
