• HOW bizarre that Hampstead’s Business Improvement District is spending money on a village ambassador, (Alessia, show me a pretty street? ‘Village ambassador’ to roam Hampstead, August 1).

Once upon a time it was local inhabitants who made visitors feel welcome, reported broken street lights, and flagged up problems that needed sorting out. As for “If you want to know the time ask a policeman”? You’ll be lucky!
