When the robots take charge…

Tulip Siddiq campaigning Kilburn High Road

Labour MP Tulip Siddiq

• YOU report MP Tulip Siddiq as saying, “No one dictates how I vote, except my constituents”, (Rebel by proxy: Tulip Siddiq defies Labour whip to vote for second EU referendum, March 14).

She sets a very dangerous precedent when she tells us that she will ignore her conscience and sense of right and wrong if the electors of Hampstead & Kilburn disagree with her. The future of politics in Britain is very bleak if others follow her lead.

I envisage a possible scenario – next week, during voting on a series of motions, Ms Siddiq rises; “On a point of order, Mr Speaker, could you delay this vote as my constituents haven’t yet told me what to do?”

Next year Ms Siddiq asks for a robot to take her place so that she can concentrate on receiving her electors instructions. In five years time most MPs are replaced in the House of Commons by robots.

By the following general election all the parties agree on a single robot in each constituency so that all decisions are subject to a people’s vote.

Two years pass and it is agreed that parliament should be turned into a museum as it is no longer necessary.

I would far rather have an MP who has the courage of their convictions and is prepared to vote for them, even if the majority of electors disagree.
