When the refugees arrived!
Thursday, 7th October 2021
• YOUR survey of refugees in this country (A proud history of opening our arms, September 30) puts the subject into a clear perspective.
However the first Huguenots arrived as from 1562, earlier than stated, while refugees from the French Revolution came to Somers Town in the 1790s and early 18th century, 100 years later than stated.
Also, Jewish refugees frequented the Cosmo restaurant (not Cosmos), Finchley Road. And the word “refugee” interestingly derives from the French réfugié thanks to the Huguenots.
