What can communities do to respond to the climate and ecological emergencies?

Friday, 15th July 2022

• WE agree with Simon Izod (It’s time for a real lead on climate change, July 1): the government and Labour opposition are lacking any sense of urgency in their response to the climate and ecological emergencies.

Unfortunately our council is not doing much better. Despite declaring a climate emergency three years ago there has not been a significant reduction in the borough’s carbon footprint.

Reductions in CO2e that have occurred are mainly due to the decarbonisation of the national grid, but global events are now threatening this progress.

So what can we do in our communities? Extinction Rebellion Camden are putting on two events to discuss this: on July 16 we will have a stall in Queen’s Crescent Market all day, from 10am to 4:30pm, and on the evening of Tuesday July 19 we are to hold a talk at Queen’s Crescent Community Centre, Ashdown Crescent, NW5 4QE, with refreshments.

Our drummers will walk up from Mornington Crescent at noon and then hold an informal percussion workshop for children and people who would like to try drumming and make a shaker.

Come for a chat at our market stall. We are ordinary, concerned, people not the extremists painted by some media. We will also be doing some “block printing”. Bring clothes to put prints on if you would like to give this a try.

Please join us on July 19, from 7.30pm to 9pm, to hear from our expert speaker about what you can do to make change happen, with information from a local scientist about the urgency for action.
