What actually happens to the recyclables?

The Edmonton incinerator

• IT’S often reported that Camden’s standing in the recycling league table is woefully low, although I am unsure just what these tables measure.

Surely no one can know what percentage of potentially recyclable material is in fact successfully recycled.

However, what I would like to know is what actually happens to the recyclables that most of us solemnly put out each week.

I cannot find anything at all about this on Camden’s website (and there’s little point in trying to ring them up to ask).

Veolia’s contract and their annual review reports are long on what is collected but entirely silent on where it then goes. If you already know, do tell us.

Is the widely held – at least by those who cannot be bothered to take their recycling seriously – belief that Camden just send it to all the (contentious) Edmonton incinerator actually true?

Should we rather be separating our rubbish into combustible and non-combustible?
