THERE were goals galore in the Premier League last night (Wednesday) but Arsene Wenger made it clear that the only ones he was interested in were scored at the Emirates Stadium.
A top night of action saw Arsenal beat Hull 2-0, while Spurs came from behind to win 2-1 at Fulham.
The shock result of the night saw Manchester United lose 1-0 against Everton at Old Trafford, a result that leaves them 12 points behind the league leaders.
But Wenger was quick to shrug off any talk about the champions and bring the focus closer to home.
“It is a surprising defeat but it’s still early for Manchester United,” said the Gunners boss. “We have seen 12 points lost before. We have to keep winning and not worry about the others.”
And Arsenal did just that after a surprise recall to the first team for Nicklas Bendtner took less than three minutes to pay off as he headed the hosts into an early lead. Mesut özil also scored in the 2-0 win after adding the finishing touches to Aaron Ramsey’s defence-splitting pass.
It was a good night for fans from north London as Spurs fought back from being a goal down at Craven Cottage to grab three points courtesy of second-half strikes from Vlad Chiriches and Lewis Holtby.
After the match, manager Andre Villas-Boas said his side were back on track after their recent drubbing at the hands of Manchester City.
“This was an important result for the team. The win was a big boost for our confidence,” said the Spurs coach. “We had to dig deep to score two winning goals.”
Spurs had to rely on goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to net the win, the French shot-stopper making three world-class saves as Fulham threw everything forward to earn themselves a deserved equaliser late on.
But Fulham found Lloris in inspired form, and AVB was quick to praise his No 1. He said: “It was fantastic for him. He needed a game like this for his confidence. This will help him. We know he is a top, top goalkeeper.”
