Champions League
Bayern Munich 0, Arsenal 2
ARSENE Wenger spoke of his “regrets” after watching Arsenal get knocked out of the Champions League last night (Wednesday) despite winning 2-0 away at Bayern Munich.
The German giants went through on away goals after the game finished 3-3 on aggregate, leaving the Gunners paying the price for the 3-1 defeat at the Emirates in the first leg.
Wenger said: “The spirit and the performance was there, and overall we had a great go.
“The regret we have is from the first game when you think we conceded a very, very cheap goal in the last five minutes. Even if we had lost 2-1 at home, you see how important that third goal was.
“I know these players, and I’ve said many times that they have a fantastic attitude and spirit. We have the quality, but unfortunately we have to go out of the Champions League and it hurts very much.”
Arsenal made a dream start at the Allianz Arena when Olivier Giroud scored after only three minutes, smashing home Theo Walcott’s dangerous low cross.
But in truth the Gunners failed to push on from their ideal opening and had to wait until four minutes from time before finding the back of the net again when Laurent Koscielny stooped to head home Santi Cazorla’s corner.
Arsenal now face a tough challenge if they are going to be back amongst Europe’s elite next season as they chase London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham for a top-four finish.
“I’m confident that we will give absolutely everything to be back next season,” Wenger added. “You could see the young players are doing very well, and we want to finish the season well.”
