We were horrified to hear of the destruction of this allotment site

• AS plotholders at the Fitzroy Park Allotments we were horrified to read about the planned destruction of a thriving inner-city allotment site, (Bassett Street: Plea to let community gardeners stay on land, August 1).
This is a multi-racial enterprise, organised by local residents to grow their own fresh vegetables and to socialise.
The lease granted to the club has proved how successful small plots of land can be; to give it to the tenants of the adjacent block of flats might be acceptable if there was overwhelming support for a private garden by these tenants; as many have gardens or balconies this is not the case.
Camden Council should be giving all possible support to all allotments, and particularly small thriving multi-racial pockets of greenery in urban areas.
Food shortages and climate change should convince the council that this enterprising and inclusive gardening club should be given all possible support.
