We should resist this privatisation by the Post Office

Post office in Camden Town High Street
• I AM horrified to learn that the main post office in Camden Town High Street is to be privatised, (Downsizing post office in Camden Town will lead to longer waiting times, objectors warn, July 19).
It is an essential service to the area, always full of customers and well run with friendly and efficient staff. Its removal to the back of some retail outfit will be in the interests of no one except the management.
If my recent experience is in any way typical, I dread to think what the service will be like under privatised management.
On a visit to the new so-called post office in Kentish Town, to obtain an application form for an international driving licence, I was told in patronising terms that I was completely mistaken and would have to write to the DVLA.
I went to the Camden Town post office where I was issued with the form, immediately, together with helpful instructions regarding its completion and the date by which I could apply.
It is simply not true that, as the Post Office’s “network and sales director” claims, that this is “the best way of safeguarding services for years to come”. My experience proves how wrong this is.
I urge all Camden residents to visit the PO website to comment and complain*. Everything possible must be done to prevent this assault on a public service.
