We need thousands more council rent homes
Thursday, 24th March 2022
• LET us get some facts out in the open on the CIP strategy, (Left and right – and the rest – join in a rare alliance to hammer Camden’s estates strategy, March 21).
First, over the past 11 years there have only been an average of just 21 additional council rent homes completed per year, some 230 in total. Some 220 replacement such homes have also been completed.
The council leader reported on television that there was a borough waiting list for housing of 6,000. It would take, at this rate, until the year 2300 to empty the waiting list.
As to existing council homes that are not up to standard, surely this – as the report states – is down to poor maintenance over many decades.
It is not for the authors of the panel to suggest an alternative strategy but to examine the mind-blowing performance of the present project in terms of delays and cost over-runs.
An example of the former is the nine-year non-building site in Cllr Marcus Boyland’s ward and the £12million cost over-run on Parliament school refurbishment in Highgate.
As certain elements in the council do claim that this project is a success, this only compounds matters. Why not admit to the failures, apologise to residents needing better homes, and replace those in charge at both the elected and officer level with competent people?
We need thousands more council rent homes and, as the report demonstrates, the CIP project has failed to meet its expectations. It is the voters of Gospel Oak who are among those whose expectations have not been met.
