We need these traffic islands

• I WONDER how much attention the powers that be have paid to the width of Prince of Wales Road.

Could we be dealing with the same person, or group of people who claimed, mistakenly, that anyone waiting on a traffic island to cross the road, would be overcome by fumes?

Perhaps they haven’t noticed that what makes Prince of Wales Road different from most non-arterial roads is how wide it is. It is its unusual width that makes the endangered traffic islands so necessary.

Cyclists do not need a lane to themselves in a road which is wide enough for passing cars to pose no threat to them.

But pedestrians, particularly the old and the disabled, will need the traffic islands more than ever when they have to watch out for bikes as well as for cars.
