We need recycling to be improved borough-wide
Thursday, 22nd February 2018
• RESIDENTS tell us that they want to do more to recycle plastics, metals, paper and other products.
Some are concerned they live in flats where there are inadequate provisions for recycling collections. So we are calling on the council to work with relevant management authorities to improve recycling across Camden’s blocks of flats.
And we will be happy to help support any residents who need assistance in pushing for better recycling facilities.
Others have told us that the communal recycling facilities near, for example, Swiss Cottage Underground station, or on Haverstock Hill, are too often over-flowing, with recycling piling up on the street. The council must make sure these bins are emptied more often.
Remember clingfilm, tissues, kitchen paper, polystyrene, old Tupperware, or black food trays shouldn’t go in the recycling bins. Neither should sweet wrappers, crisp packets, black bin liners, drinks cartons, or coffee cups.
Under the current rules all these items should be placed in the regular rubbish, alongside general waste, (now only collected, for many parts of the borough, once a fortnight).
Camden Conservatives objected to fortnightly bin collections from the start. We warned this would lead to an increase in littering and fly-tipping, damaging, rather than enhancing, our natural environment. That’s exactly what’s happening.
