We need action to deal with a damaged manhole cover

Thursday, 4th January 2018

• SINCE February last year, opposite 123 or 184 Camden Road there has been a damaged manhole cover in the road.

Every time it is run over by a vehicle it sounds like gunshot. Camden Road is a busy road and day and night every few seconds there is the noise. At night it is difficult to sleep.

This has been reported by many of the nearby residents on many occasions and we are now in January. Camden Council say it is Transport for London’s responsibility and TfL say it is Thames Water’s responsibility.

There are two issues: first, the noise. Camden Council have powers to deal with noise. The noise we are talking about is continuous 24 hours a day. If I was constantly to cause a similar noise 24 hours a day in my garden, and neighbours complained, Camden would take positive steps to stop the noise. Why can’t they use those powers on TfL and Thames Water?

In addition, the road is badly damaged by the manhole cover. If a cyclist hit the damaged section it could throw him or her off their bike. With all the traffic on the road that could lead to a serious accident or a fatality.
