We need a strategy for better lighting by the canal

Thursday, 17th May 2018

• FOR about a year, the Elm Village Tenants’ and Residents’ Association has been increasingly concerned about the lighting on the canal that runs along one side of the estate and acts as a valuable link between St Pancras Way and Royal College Street, Camden Town.

Clearly when it is dark there is the risk of an accident and also of running into the drug dealers who gather there. The tenants’ and residents’ association has tried to get action but the Canal and River Trust (C&RT) claim that when the lights are fixed they are then vandalised.

Thousands of people, both residents and visitors, use the route which is convenient and enjoyable. And, unlike in the past, there are many who choose to use it after dark. Camden Council and the C&RT should devise and implement a lighting strategy for that whole stretch of the canal.

How much can be achieved at low cost is shown by lighting on the side of the student accommodation next to Camley Street bridge. I believe many people would support such a move.
