We need a policy that protects Londoners from pollution

Exhaust diesel fumes

Protect us from pollution

• I AM writing to express dismay at Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s response to the Uxbridge by-election result.

Instead of standing up and making the strong case for a policy which protects Londoners from pollution he instead criticised Sadiq Khan, telling him to “reflect” on ULEZ.

There are plenty of ways to defend the scheme; it even points out on the back of many buses that nine out of 10 cars in outer London are ULEZ compliant. There is a scrappage scheme in place which he could have highlighted, or even offered to improve.

Instead he has eroded the case for green policies by caving in the first whiff of opposition, as has Camden’s own Danny Beales who argued to delay the expansion.

It’s time for Labour to stand up for policies which protect ours and our children’s futures, not engage in a toxic race with the Tories to ditch their green plans.
