• FOR more than 10 years, local residents have been promised improvements to Camden Town Underground station, which would treble the size of the station to deal with the massive congestion caused by the success of Camden Town as a visitor destination.

Those plans relied on capital funding from central government, which has not been forthcoming despite the government’s willingness to waste shed-loads of public money on HS2.

Camden Town has recovered strongly from the Covid pandemic and it continues to attract large numbers of welcome visitors; but current proposals to turn Camden Lock into a theme park, complete with a ferris wheel, will result in even more visitors arriving at a station that is already dangerously overcrowded.

Station improvements are in the interests of businesses, residents and visitors and, no doubt, the council will continue to press the government for the necessary funding. In the meantime, residents are surely justified in objecting to proposals for a ferris wheel, not least because we need a new station not a theme park.
