We must have better facilities for people with dementia
Friday, 10th May 2019
• I’M very surprised and disappointed by Camden Council’s lack of facilities, support and activities for people with dementia and their carers.
There must be hundreds if not thousands of people living in the community that are not in care homes, yet there is hardly anywhere to go.
In neighbouring Barnet there are lots of things on offer – cafés, services, etc. Yes Camden has three day centres but apart from that nothing.
There was a dementia café in the now derelict Highgate Newtown but it has moved. I spent two hours looking for it and then gave up.
There should be much more, places to go for a person with dementia, where there is no stigma, a place to chat and meet fellow carers.
A search of the area for services in Camden shows up nail cutting by Age Concern as a special activity on the Alzheimer’s Society website.
Yes we know there are cuts in the government funding but how come there seems to be lots for children and toddlers but nothing for people with dementia, the most vulnerable in society?
Dementia is estimated to hit one in three older people by 2021. It could be you, a friend, or family member. There are millions with the condition and more needs to be done.
Today’s healthy are tomorrow’s dementia victims, I’m sorry to say. Until it affects you personally, people will not know the lack of support there is.
