We must have a long-term plan for reducing energy cost
Thursday, 18th August 2022
• THE unprecedented increase in the energy cap will force many households into debt and put people’s health at risk as they sit in cold homes.
Listening to the Conservative leadership candidates debate the government’s response to this crisis, there is little discussion on meaningful long-term solutions for energy costs: insulating leaky homes and generating renewable energy.
It’s clear that there is an immediate need for a national programme of insulation. Working with local authorities and housing associations, the government could deliver this immediately and it would have a lasting impact not just this bleak winter but for years ahead.
Of course, the government should establish help for those struggling to pay their energy bills. They should also have a long-term plan for reducing costs. It’s time for action for the long term.
