So why are they digging the holes?

• WHILE Barry Fox is an acknowledged expert in his field, his letter (5G does not involve the hassle of digging up our streets, June 10) does not make sense.

If, as he states “one of 5G’s main pluses is that it does not involve the very Victorian hassle of digging up streets to lay copper wires or fibre optic cables”, could he please explain why almost every road in Hampstead is suffering from the dreaded yellow perils suspending parking bays?

There are temporary traffic lights everywhere, and large notices on all the bright blue barriers stating “5G Broadband”.

To be fair to the operatives, they are very quick and efficient but the chaos, dust and noise caused by cutting sections of tarmac, digging trenches, scooping out the loose soil, then filling in with cement and more tarmac, the work often lasting up to a fortnight, is not exactly a figment of our imagination.

Perhaps his road has not yet suffered this inconvenience but no doubt it will.
