We are sick of being told what our needs are

• QUOTING from a secret Camden Council officer document from the secret (Gospel Oak Vision) assembly “We have shaped and refined the trial (Gospel Oak road closures) scheme with the needs of disabled residents in mind”.

So far as is known no resident with a disability, (officers cannot even get the language right) has been approached to ask us about our needs. Indeed many of us have had our disabilities made worse by their trial scheme.

For some of us, vehicles taking us to medical appointments cannot get close our homes. Others have to either pay extra taxi fares to go round the block and others get stuck in traffic jams.

Simple things like repairing broken pavements near to the sheltered housing block and providing dropped kerbs for those of us in wheelchairs have not been done despite the money having being readily available for over three-and-a-half years and repeated requests for these to be done.

I hear that there is to be yet another firm of consultants employed to research our needs, bringing the total number to 12 so far in the Gospel Oak Vision project.

We intend to set up our own group and produce a list of our needs, rather than have officers tell us that they are and “shaping” them for us.

Our first three needs are likely to be:

— guaranteed vehicular access to the front doors of all residents with mobility issues;

— repairing the pavements and potholes;

— and providing dropped kerbs.

Each project to have a named officer responsible and timetable for completion.

We are sick of being ignored by officers who tell us and councillors what our needs are. We are tired of being treated as second-class citizens.
