Tulip Siddiq

• THERESA May appears to be on course to win the election, although the weaknesses in the Tory policies become apparent almost daily.

In Tulip Siddiq, Hampstead and Kilburn are fortunate to have a Parliamentary candidate who has, in her brief two years as our Labour MP, shown that she is principled, independent, committed and very capable.

She displays the energy and intellect to address the considerable issues which confront us. Locally we have pressure upon the funding for schools and nurseries. Nationally we are beset by the unanticipated, rolling revelations of the problems we face in the process of Brexit.

If we observe the early mismanagement of Brexit negotiations we cannot feel confident of the ability of those concerned, to intelligently pursue the best possible outcome. Were it not for the legal intervention of Gina Miller the Conservative government would have tried to push through the proposed Brexit deal without Parliamentary examination.

The Labour Party’s internal sniping has contributed to media undermining of Jeremy Corbyn. This demonstrated disloyalty has eased the path of the Conservatives, who, if not halted, will feel that they can pursue their policies without effective contrary argument.

Voters have to confront and constrain this inclination. They can vote strategically and they can take note of the record of Tulip Siddiq, who has shown her principled resignation from the Parliamentary front bench, giving herself freedom for opposition to the government’s short, flawed bill on Brexit.

I have only once in my lifetime sought help from my MP. I did so last year, when TfL were being difficult over renewal of my disability conjestion zone access. This is the domain of Sadiq Khan’s office which failed to make any response whatsoever.

Tulip Siddiq, on the other hand, promptly nudged TfL to address the issue, this among the myriad of greater issues with which she has to deal.
