Waterlow-Park

‘The Friends of Waterlow Park’s successive committees, members, and gardening volunteers have worked consistently to enhance and preserve the park’

• I MUST agree with Sharon Lytton (Plans to fence off part of Waterlow Park are wrong, February 24) – that resonates with all Waterlow Park users.

As the main service user group since the early 1990s, the Friends of Waterlow Park’s successive committees, members, and gardening volunteers have worked consistently to enhance and preserve the park.

The proposed nature study area in the upper woods, the subject of a public consultation run by us for Camden, sought the views of park users. None of its suggestions were fixed and all proffered for people to comment on.

Happily many did and the assessment of the responses is now under way. Some extra enclosure and gates was included as a suggestion (to keep children in safely and dogs out) but it was made clear that the space would remain open to all.

Most people can negotiate a gate so this plot would still be there for all to enjoy. Currently probably only children and dogs do so, as it is dark, muddy, and overhung with branches.

While it is acknowledged that human use of an area is not always conducive to improving biodiversity, planting mixed native hedges is one good way to do that as not many humans can walk on hedges and so small wildlife within remains undisturbed.
