Sir Keir Starmer
• I AM delighted that our MP for Holborn & St Pancras, Sir Keir Starmer, won re-endorsement from the overwhelming majority of our Labour Party members last week and strong support from our trade unions and socialist societies.
The turnout was high; in Highgate 80 members attended and more than 50 in Kentish Town.
We are enthusiastic about the vision that Sir Keir brings to Labour and the British people. It is anchored in the values that have inspired Labour since its foundation more than a century ago.
Sir Keir’s namesake – Keir Hardie – was also someone who was driven by a desire to transform British society for the better, but sadly never had the chance to put this into practice.
It would take until Clement Attlee’s 1945 government for these aims to be transformed into reality.
The results are there for all of us to see: the NHS and the social security system, still bastions of our society, despite the appalling cuts they have endured under the Tories.
Can anyone imagine fighting the Covid pandemic without our brilliant nurses and doctors at hand when we needed them most?
Yet the Tories voted against the creation of the NHS, an indelible stain on their party.
We are fully behind Sir Keir as he battles to make Labour electable once more. Being out of power leaves Labour, and the communities we represent, on the margins.
There is an urgent need to put forward radical but practical policies that people can recognise and support.
