We are campaigning for a care income

Thursday, 18th June 2020

• THANK you for including our letter (Racism and police violence are part of the pandemic in the UK, too, June 11) among the many others expressing hope and solidarity with the new movement against racism everywhere.

I meant to say that, together with the Global Women’s Strike, we are campaigning for a care income for all those, of every gender, who are caring for people, the urban and rural environment, and the natural world.

This work is mostly done by women, unwaged or underpaid, whose workload has massively increased since the Covid pandemic – especially single mothers and women of colour.

Racism is based on the idea that some of us need less and deserve less.

A care income for all carers would be a huge step towards ending the power relations in societies everywhere which leave women and children at the bottom.

In this spirit, we’re taking part in Poor People’s Campaign’s Digital Gathering, this Saturday (June 20) and invite your readers to join us.

The Poor People’s Campaign is a fusion movement, taking forward the work of Martin Luther King, and coming together across movements demanding an end to poverty, racism, war and environmental destruction.
