• WE refer to our letter (Tribute to Claude James, January 14) in which we stated that Claude James had died of the Covid-19 virus. We regret that this is incorrect as unfortunately we were misinformed.

Claude James died of pneumonia and, in actual fact, repeated tests for the coronavirus while he was in hospital with pneumonia were always negative.

We sincerely apologise to his family and friends for any upset this may have caused and we hope it will not detract from the general tone of our tribute, which was to honour the memory of a wonderful man and a sincere friend who was an inspiration to us all.
