Cars on the Heath

‘The City Of London mismanages Hampstead Heath’

• DURING my usual walk on Hampstead Heath last Sunday I was shocked to find that the top of Parliament Hill was littered with cars and large coloured banners of all sorts, which continued to spread on down the hill towards the ponds.

Nestled among these, was an ice cream van that continued to pump out its dangerous toxic diesel fumes; which is the very thing that I am, and I’m sure many other Heath users are, trying to escape from.

It is clear that by allowing such events to go ahead, the City Of London, which manages, or in this case, mismanages, the Heath, does not seem to care about its sensitive biodiverse ecology or preserving it as a tranquil place of nature that can restore body and spirit.

Instead it is sending out a clear message that it intends to run the Heath as a paying concern, similar to the way that it does in the business sector of the City, even if this means covering the fields with the vehicles of these carnival events.

Unless we start to voice our opposition to the way the Heath is being mismanaged, it would not surprise me to wake up one day, to find a Ferris wheel and car park on the top of kite hill.
