ALMOST 400 boxing fans got the taste of what it must be like to be part of a big fight night in Las Vegas when they flocked to the London Irish Centre in Camden for the first dinner show “of a new era”.

St Pancras ABC, one of the oldest amateur boxing clubs in the country, has been part of a comeback story more fitting of a Rocky Balboa film.
It slipped and ducked a number of potential knock-out blows that threatened it with closure, surviving leasing problems and an ugly bout with American owners from the Kronk Gym, who briefly took over the Kentish Town-based club.

Against all the odds the Saints battled back and reopened their doors to the public last summer following a hi-tech refurbishment. And on Thursday the final bit of the puzzle was put in place when they showcased a fantastic night of boxing in Camden Square.

Councillors Jill Fraser and Flick Rea, who have both been long-term supporters and campaigners for St Pancras, were among the guests who turned out to enjoy the 10-bout dinner show.

There was an added touch of professionalism with MC Bob Smith, who announced all 273 fights during the London Olympics, taking charge of calling all fighters into the ring.

It was very much a mixed night for the Saints’ contingent. Bilal Bakai starred in a skills bout to open the show. Fab four Louis Roncari, Joe Peet, Jernair Thompson and Mohammed Ali all won their fights.

Debutant Aaron Donohue, Tony Prosommenos and Rubel Ahmed, however, were all on the wrong side of the judges’ decision in closely-fought contests.

Saints coach CJ Hussein is certain the club is now heading for a bright future, especially after it was given a Club Mark Award from the England ABA.
“It was a terrific night of boxing to officially welcome in a new era for St Pancras Boxing Club,” he said.

“Six of our seven fighters were home-grown which is a fantastic achievement considering that we’ve only been back at our home gym for about a year.

“We raised some vital funds, which will be used to buy a mini-bus and hopefully pay for us to send a team of fighters to compete in either Cuba or Finland.

“I want to thank all of our supporters and sponsors, especially GM Real. They have all played a vital part in helping St Pancras get back on its feet before the 10 count!”
