MORE than 450 youngsters from across Camden and Islington flocked to Coram’s Fields to help celebrate the return of one of their favourite footballing fixtures.
The 2013 Camden Unity Cup enjoyed one of its biggest turn-outs as scores of eight to 16-year-olds enjoyed a free-flowing football festival last Wednesday.
The family fun day was about more than just the football, with revellers also enjoying a host of top entertainment including live music, food, face-painting and even a rodeo bull ride.
When it came to the trophy stakes, FC Unity (pictured in their blue kit) beat Chettle Court Rangers 1-0 to win the Under-10s Cup, while Camden Elite (pictured in their orange CNJ kits) beat Islington’s Copenhagen Youth Project 4-3 on penalties to win the Under-12s Cup after the game finished 1-1 in normal time.
The Under-14s final also finished 1-1, with Isledon Wolves going on to beat Stewarts Road 3-2 on penalties.
The final trophy of the day was won by South Hampstead after they beat Copenhagen Youth Project 2-0 to be crowned Under-16s champions.
Festival co-ordinator Raja Miah, who works for Fitzrovia Youth in Action, one of the main organisers of the event, paid tribute to the team effort that went into making the day such a success.
“The celebration is unique in that is it organised by young people, for young people,” he said.
“Over a 12-week period, a steering group of 15 young volunteers participated in event management training and were supported in planning and delivering all aspects of the programme, including stewarding, organising food and refreshments, decorations, hosting and planning a variety of games and entertainment on the day.
“Over 50 young people helped steward the event and everyone involved played their part in making the 2013 Camden Unity Cup a huge success.”
